… our walk from St Juan de Ortega to Burgos did not go quite to plan. We were looking forward to arriving in Burgos as it meant a rest day and an opportunity to do some laundry. The day started cool but the skies were blue. This weather stayed with us for almost all the day as we passed through small towns, farms, around the perimeter of Burgos airport and onto our way into the city. While we saw grey clouds ahead, it took a local to advise us to ‘walk faster’ for us to realise that rain was imminent. Minutes after we had put on our rain gear there was a rumbling and then a flash – thunder, lightning, then heavy rain ensure us ‘pilgrims’ walked much faster. We found shelter in a doorway of a massive stadium, just enough to keep dry and to wait for the rain to ease. We arrived at our hotel very wet and exhausted. Our rest day was deserved.
The doors of Spain come in many varieties – the one pictured was from the beginning of this day – but the door to the stadium that kept us dry was just appreciated.
