… mud, everywhere. Sticky mud, the sort that you are not sure if your shoe will stay on when you take a step, the sort where your feet weigh twice (or more) what they should be – the mud to shoe ratio is well in muds favour. The progress you make is like that of your worst nightmares when someone is chasing you.
Welcome to our walk from Hontanas to Castrojirez. The walk to Hontanas had been wet, we appreciated the cafe and its warmth, but our destination was Castrojirez. The path was away from the road and the muddiest bit was only about 1km long but took so much longer than it should. To the left we could see the road, the smooth road, the non-muddy road – but we were on “The way” so shortcuts weren’t an option.
We made it. The dryer path and the road later on were appreciated. But my shoes never recovered. They retained that mud colouration for the remainder of the Camino.
